Neuropsychological Evaluations for Children
on the Upper West Side
When school keeps feeling harder than it should for your child, a thoughtful evaluation can turn guesswork into a plan. Often, parents and children find themselves stuck in a cycle of burnout and exhaustion from the daily demands of life and school, despite their best efforts.
Our child neuropsychological testing gathers information about attention, learning, memory, executive functioning skills, social communication, self-regulation, and developmental milestones, leading to a broad understanding of your child’s relative strengths and weaknesses. Testing can help both children and parents feel relief when they realize they aren’t doing anything ‘wrong’—they just need different strategies to succeed.
Testing is in person on the Upper West Side parent intake and feedback can be done via secure telehealth.
When to Consider a Neuropsych Evaluation
We recommend testing in a few different situations. When kids aren’t doing as well in school as parents or teachers think they should be doing, testing can be helpful. If your child struggles with social situations, making friends, or has sensory sensitivities, testing can also clarify questions about developmental differences like ADHD, autism, or speech and language differences.
A neuropsychological evaluation also helps when your child experiences slow progress with reading, writing, or math, when processing seems slow, or when language and memory abilities feel inconsistent. ome kids show uneven abilities, strong in one area, yet struggling in another—or experience behavioral shifts when academic demands increase.
Anxiety and mood can play a role in these challenges, and we work to understand how all these pieces interact so that we can differentiate emotional challenges from learning or neurodevelopmental differences. Recommendations flow directly from an integrated view of all the data, so you get a holistic, data-driven plan for next steps.
What We Assess in Neuropsychological Evaluations
A comprehensive evaluation with a neuropsychologist explores how your child thinks, learns, and manages everyday demands.
We will assess cognitive abilities and reasoning, then dig into attention and executive functions—planning, working memory, inhibition—to see what helps or what trips your child up. Memory and learning abilities are assessed using both verbal and visual formats.
Language skills come next (expressive, receptive, and social pragmatics), paired with checks of visual–spatial and motor skills to round out the picture. Processing speed gets a dedicated look to understand how quickly information is taken in and put to use.
Academic skills—reading, writing, and math—are mapped to classroom expectations so strengths and gaps are easy to see.
Behavior and emotional functioning are considered throughout the evaluation, drawing on perspectives from home, school, and your child.
Pulled together, these findings create a clear profile and translate into practical, doable recommendations you can start using right away at home and at school.
Our Process
We begin with a brief consultation to confirm a good fit and goals, followed by a parent intake that informs a tailored testing plan; teacher input is invited when helpful.
In-person testing typically takes two to three mornings with movement breaks and a calm, predictable flow. After we score and interpret your child’s assessment, we meet for feedback—either via telehealth or in person—to review the results and discuss next steps.
You receive a readable, actionable report that can be used to coordinate and plan care for your child.
ADHD Testing & Differential Diagnosis
Accurate assessment of ADHD isn’t diagnosed from a checklist alone. At Gordon Therapy Group, we integrate multi-informant ratings from home and school, clinical history, and performance data. We also look for and rule out common lookalikes such as learning differences, anxiety, sleep issues, and medical concerns that can mimic attention problems.

Frequently Asked Questions
What ages do you test?
We evaluate children and teens across elementary through high school. During the consultation, we’ll confirm the timing and scope based on your child’s age and the referral questions.
How long does the testing process take, and when can we expect to receive the results?
Most evaluations require two to threeone to two mornings of in-person testing. Feedback typically follows after scoring and integration, with a clear timeline discussed at the consult.
Neuropsych vs. psychoeducational evaluation—what’s the difference?
A neuropsychological exam looks beyond academics to brain-based skills, such as attention, memory, language, and processing; it connects those capacities to school and daily life. Neuropsychological testing also gives a more complete picture on your child’s strengths and weaknesses and overall learning profile.
A psychoeducational evaluation focuses more narrowly on academic achievement and IQ to help determine school placement.
Do you take insurance, and can we use out-of-network benefits?
We do not accept insurance. We provide a detailed receipt (superbill) so you can submit for reimbursement if your plan includes those benefits. Our fee for a complete neuropsychological evaluation, including the report and feedback session, is $6500.
How should my child prepare?
A good night’s sleep, a usual breakfast, and any prescribed glasses or hearing devices. Bring a snack and water; we’ll provide breaks and encouragementd keep the day predictable.
Will you coordinate with our school or physician?
Yes, with your consent. We can align with teachers, school teams, pediatricians, and specialists to ensure that recommendations are carried through.
