Eating Disorder Therapy in Upper West Side, NY

Numerous messages are circulating about how we should look.  Everywhere you turn, another TikToker or streamer is talking about intuitive eating, the best skinny foods, or how to achieve that perfect gym body.

In addition to all the pop culture chatter, families often also focus on food and body shape. Maybe your grandma likes to comment on whether you’re too skinny, or your mom gives you a look every time you reach for dessert.  When you put it all together, most people have some hang-ups about their bodies and food. We’re here to help you with that.

Our psychologists on the Upper West Side offer non-judgmental skills-based support for both eating disorders and disordered eating, as well as body image concerns. We keep plans realistic and practical, with steps that will help you live a more fulfilling, happier life.

Who We Help

Before we discuss the tools and procedures, it helps to identify the patterns we see and treat:

If you notice that your teen has dropped weight suddenly, started an intense workout routine, disappears into the bathroom after every meal, or is pushing the food around on their plate without eating…

If your child is a picky eater and will only eat a few specific foods…

If you find that a large part of your day is spent planning and thinking about food and what you will – or won’t – eat….

If you sometimes binge on food, feeling out of control and eating a large amount rapidly….

If you have to exercise in order to eat dessert…

If you think about your shape and size constantly, or hate your body…

Our Psychotherapy Approach

Care is structured and human. We’ll tailor the plan to your specific goals, schedule, and energy levels.

  • CBT for eating/shape thoughts. Notice rigid rules and “all-or-nothing” beliefs; practice more flexible thinking.
  • Regular eating & gentle structure. Predictable meals/snacks, and gentle exposures to face feared foods.
  • Family-Based Therapy. Working with parents to help kids and teens learn and/or return to healthy eating behaviors
  • Body image work. Gradual exposure to avoided clothing/photos, kinder self-talk, and focus on function over appearance.
  • Values-based goals. Energy for your day, shared meals with loved ones, movement you enjoy—not punishment.
  • Care coordination. With your consent, we can collaborate with your primary care physician, pediatrician, obstetrician-gynecologist, psychiatrist, and registered dietitian.

Different stories need different mixes of support. We’ll talk with you first to understand yours.

When a Higher Level of Care Is Appropriate

Suppose we see medical instability, purging, rapid weight change, severe restriction/over-exercise, or high day-to-day impairment. In that case, we’ll discuss options and help you connect with the right support. Your safety comes first; we’ll stay involved as a bridge when helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need therapy or a higher level of care?

We’ll assess together. Therapy is suitable for mild to moderate patterns without an acute medical risk. If intensive support is safer, we’ll help you connect and coordinate.

We don’t prescribe meal plans. We’ll help you establish healthy eating habits with gentle structure, and we collaborate with a registered dietitian to provide additional support in meeting specific caloric needs.

We’ll discuss weight respectfully and in context—health, function, and comfort—never as a moral score. The focus is on behaviors and well-being.
