Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
on the Upper West Side, NY

When life starts feeling like a juggling act, CBT gives you practical tools to help you cope. Sessions are collaborative, structured, and skills-based, with clear steps to practice between visits.

We provide CBT at our Upper West Side office near Central Park and offer secure telehealth anywhere in New York, Connecticut, or New Jersey. Below you’ll find some of our CBT services for adults, children, and teens, as well as targeted care for skin-picking and nail-biting.

What CBT Looks Like at Gordon Therapy Group

First we figure out what your patterns are, and where you might want to make changes. We set goals together and break them down into manageable pieces. We set a collaborative agenda at the beginning of each session, working together to learn new skills and how to apply them in real life.

From week to week, we review what happened, figuring out what helps and what doesn’t.

Your psychologist will also coordinate with schools, physicians, or prescribers to make sure everyone is on the same page and working together.

Who We Help

We help a wide range of people. Everyone gets stressed sometimes, but if you have started to feel like more of your time is spent feeling bad then good, or that anxiety is interfering with your daily functioning – work, sleep, relationships – then it’s time to give us a call.

CBT helps you figure out where and why you’ve been getting stuck, then take small steps toward change.

Parents often reach out for a child who has big feelings or tantrums, seems worried all the time, or is avoiding various things.

We teach skills kids can actually use and coach parents to keep the momentum going between visits. We collaborate with schools to make sure your child is supported in every part of their life.

CBT Tools We Use

We keep our approach practical and plain-spoken. For anxiety and OCD, we use exposure and response prevention and brief cognitive tools, so you learn to face stress without falling into old rituals.

For depression and low energy, we rebuild momentum with behavioral activation and values-based routines. To address perfectionism and stress, we work with you to figure out what’s really important to you and help you build skills for tolerating anxiety around everything else. For sleep trouble, we use tools from the CBT for insomnia treatment protocols, which go beyong the usual sleep hygiene rules.

CBT for Adults

If you’re tired of “coping harder” and want change you can feel, adult CBT focuses on actions that move the needle: starting tasks sooner, staying with them longer, and letting good enough be good enough.

We’ll map how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors reinforce each other and then change the parts you can control. Our work with CBT for Adults centers on clear goals, brief experiments, and momentum you can see in daily life.

CBT for Children

Child sessions are active and developmentally friendly—short practices, visuals, small experiments that build confidence. Parents learn simple prompts and praise that make brave tries more likely at home and school.

We align with teachers so that the same language and expectations appear in class. Our approach to CBT for Children blends kid-sized skills with parent coaching and school collaboration.

CBT for Teens

Teens want tools that respect their time and work in their world. We target social anxiety, panic, perfectionism, study systems, and values-based routines that outlast bursts of motivation.

Parents are looped in just enough to support progress without power struggles. CBT for Teens provides the same skills as CBT for kids or adults, but with understanding of the unique experience of being a teen – striving for independence but not quite there yet.

Skin Picking & Nail Biting Therapy (BFRBs)

For body-focused repetitive behaviors, we use habit reversal training and ComB (awareness cues, competing responses, and stimulus changes) to help you urge surf and give you tools for interupting the cycle.

When appropriate, we add brief parent coaching so routines hold outside the session. Our care for skin picking and nail biting is concrete, stepwise, and tailored to everyday triggers.

In-Person on the UWS & Secure Telehealth (NY, NJ, CT)

Our office is near Central Park, close to the 1, 2, 3, and B/C lines. Many people use a hybrid plan—hands-on work in the room when that helps, online sessions for busy weeks—so consistency doesn’t depend on your commute. Telehealth is available in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CBT as effective online as in person?

For many concerns—anxiety, OCD, depression, stress—outcomes are comparable when sessions are regular, and skills are practiced between visits. We’ll help you choose the format that fits your goals. However, for kids we strongly recommend in-person sessions.

We call it home practice: one or two small steps tied to your goals. Think five-minute experiments, not a second job. We fine-tune the plan each week to keep it doable.

Yes, with your consent. We provide concise updates and recommendations so the plan is used consistently.

Timelines vary by goal and frequency. Many people notice early wins within a few weeks; lasting change builds with steady practice.
