Teen Therapy for Stress & School Issues on the Upper West Side
NYC school life moves fast—class load, activities, friend dynamics, screens, and the pressure to “do it all.” When stress turns into avoidance, late work, or a dip in mood, therapy can help.
We use CBT for stress management therapy that fits real school weeks: short, doable steps, clear goals, and visible progress. At Gordon Therapy Group, patients can participate in child psychology sessions in person near Central Park or online anywhere in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut.
When Therapy Can Help
If your child had been hiding in their room, or bursting into tears frequently, it may be time to reach out. You might notice classes or clubs getting skipped, test anxiety that scrambles thinking, or a pile of late assignments that feels impossible to start.
Perfectionism and fear of mistakes can stall projects; social stress can make group work or lunch feel hard. Some teens may feel more irritable and unmotivated, sleep late, or lie awake scrolling through their devices.
If this sounds familiar, a brief, focused course of CBT can make days more workable.
How We Help
We begin by mapping what’s actually happening—thoughts, feelings, and choices that feed the stress loop. Then we teach new coping skills to change those patterns.
We help teens learn new ways of managing their feelings and their friendships, and provide a safe space to think through challenges and consider healthier options.
Parent Role & SPACE-Informed Support
Teens want autonomy; parents want to help. We balance both. You’ll get brief check-ins and home strategies that support progress without over-accommodating anxiety.
That might mean adjusting how reassurance is offered, shaping homework routines, or using clear, calm scripts during tough moments.
We’re transparent about privacy and the safety exceptions from day one.
School Collaboration
Because teens spend so much of their time at school, it’s helpful for us to be in touch and hear what the teachers are seeing. If parents and teens agree, we can also share practical recommendations with counselors or teachers to reduce avoidance behaviors and improve stress load.
Sometimes, if school is a real struggle, we may recommend neuropsych testing to more fully understand your child’s learning profile and provide the school recommendations on how to help them achieve and learn.
Skills Teens Learn
We keep skills concrete so they hold during busy weeks:
- Tools for worry, rumination, and more flexible self-talk
- Exposure ladders for feared tasks (presentations, labs, tryouts)
- Study systems, planning blocks, and simple tech boundaries that stick
- Sleep strategiesanchors and quick regulation skills for anxiety spikes before big days
Measuring Progress
Progress shouldn’t be down to guesswork. We track avoidance, sleep, mood, class engagement, and follow-through.
Each week, your teen receives feedback and has the opportunity to problem-solve roadblocks ensuring the plan remains aligned with real life.

In-Person on the UWS & Secure Telehealth (NY, NJ, & CT)
We love to see teens in-person, but sometimes a video session allows for necessary flexibility. That’s why we offer tele-health in addition to office visits.
Our office is located near Central Park, close to the 1, 2, 3, and B/C lines. Telehealth is HIPAA-secure anywhere in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut.
Frequently Asked Questions
How involved are parents?
Enough to help, not so much that progress depends on you. We aim to balance maintaining trust with your teen and respecting their privacy, while also updating and collaborating with parents as needed. We typically meet with parents via telehealth every few weeks to give updates, get feedback, and provide guidance on how best to handle difficult situations with your teen.
What if my teen doesn’t want to talk?
It is normal for teens to be ambivalent about starting treatment, especially if it was suggested by their parents. However, if after a few sessions they are still not engaged, we may switch to parent work. Each family is different, and we meet your teen where they are to help them move forward.
How soon might we notice changes?
Many teens notice early shifts within a few weeks when they practice between sessions. Focused courses commonly run 12–16+ sessions, depending on the rate of progress.
Can you coordinate with the school or the psychiatry department?
With consent, yes. Collaboration helps therapy have an impact where it’s needed—in classrooms, home routines, and medication plans.
Can we switch between in-person and telehealth?
Absolutely. Hybrid schedules help therapy stay steady during exams, rehearsals, travel, or illness.
