In-Person Therapy on the Upper West Side
For many people, psychotherapy is most effective when it happens in the same room. Face-to-face sessions offer fewer distractions, and a kind of focused attention that can be difficult to recreate at home.
In our Upper West Side office near Central Park, we provide evidence-based treatment that is organized, goal-directed, and grounded in clinical best practices. Sessions are paced carefully, with an emphasis on practical skills and a clear plan for between-session practice.

Who In-Person Care Helps
In-person therapy is better than telehealth for engaging children and teens. For adults, in person is often preferred because it makes connecting with your therapist easier, improves communication, and helps with focus and attention in session.
It is also helpful when privacy at home is limited, work or family interruptions make telehealth difficult, or when focus is harder to sustain outside the office. Post-pandemic, we can all use a little more in-person, face-to-face connection time.
Why Choose In-Person (vs. Online)
Office-based sessions allow for richer clinical observation and more immediate coaching. Nonverbal cues, pacing, and avoidance behaviors are often easier to detect and address in person. This can matter in cognitive-behavioral approaches where progress depends on practicing skills, not only understanding them.
In child and adolescent sessions, in-person work can make it easier to observe how attention, flexibility, and emotion regulation show up during tasks, and to adjust strategies in the moment.
When convenience is the main barrier, telehealth can be incorporated without losing continuity. Many clients do well with a hybrid plan that uses both formats intentionally.
Our Clinical Approach
We set collaborative goals, track progress you can feel in daily life, and adjust quickly. Methods Our work is structured, collaborative, and grounded in established standards of care. Early sessions focus on clarifying goals and identifying the patterns that maintain distress or impairment.
We track progress using concrete indicators that show up in daily life, such as reduced avoidance, more stable routines, fewer panic-driven behaviors, improved follow-through, or less conflict around responsibilities.
All treatment is supervised by Dr. Tamar Gordon, PhD (20+ years in CBT) so you always know you are getting expert attention.
Concerns Commonly Addressed In Person
In-person CBT is commonly used for generalized anxiety and chronic worry, social anxiety, panic symptoms, stress-related difficulties, and perfectionism.
For depression, we often use behavioral activation to rebuild routine, restore meaningful activity, and reduce withdrawal. For OCD, ERP is a first-line treatment, and in-person sessions can be helpful for building confidence and momentum in exposure practice.
For eating concerns, in-person sessions can support meals and snacks, and provide a safe space to address body-image challenges
For children and adolescents, in-person therapy may address anxiety, emotion regulation, school stress, and habit concerns such as skin picking or hair pulling. Parent involvement is included to support growth
with the goal of carrying strategies into home routines and, when appropriate, into school settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I decide between in-person and telehealth?
Think about what’s getting in the way. If distractions at home are derailing you or you want hands-on coaching and quicker exposure planning, in-person sessions can help. If logistics are the main hurdle, we can start online or use a hybrid plan.
Can I switch formats mid-course?
Yes. Many clients transition between in-person and telehealth during the course of treatment. A well-structured treatment plan can continue without restarting, with adjustments made to preserve momentum.
What happens in the first session?
We start by understanding you and mapping your patterns. Once you and your therapist agree on what is going on, the next step is working on how to make the changes you want or need. Together, you learn new ways of thinking, acting, and coping to improve the way you feel.
For children, the first session is with parents to get a complete history and picture of the presenting concerns. After that, we meet your child in a separate visit to start building rapport and connection, before learning new skills that can help make change. We work with you and your child to learn new skills to make life better.
Do you coordinate with schools or physicians?
Yes. Coordination may include brief updates or recommendations to support consistency across settings, especially for children and adolescents.
How long does CBT usually take?
Duration depends on goals, severity, and session frequency. Many clients notice early improvements as skills are practiced consistently, with more durable change building over time.
