Medication and Therapy Interaction

Depending on the diagnosis, there are different efficacies and recommendations for medications.  Often, medication and therapy work best together.  For example, anti-depressants can help a person fight off the lethargy, suicidal thoughts, and inactivity of a severe depression.  Once a little more energy and basic safety is in place, you’re able to engage with cognitive behavioral therapy and learn the necessary tools to return to a fully healthy state of mind and body.  For others, therapy may get you almost all the way back to your healthiest self, and starting medication gives that extra little push to eliminate any remaining symptoms.

However, medicine is not always part of the equation.  Many people experience significant improvement from therapy alone.   The decision to take medication should be considered as part of a complete treatment plan with a good therapist and a psychiatrist.
